Diamana WB/BB Shafts - 2024 Forum Review

Introduction

Aloha Fellow Golf Fanatics -

First off I have to thank the MyGolfSpy Forum Team and Mitsubishi for putting this test together, and for the selection as a tester. I have had a pretty chaotic past few years with my career, but I am settled and ready to get down to business.  If you have been following along, my family and I recently moved to Hawaii from Oregon.

(Current Gamer Shaft)

Golf has been a part of my life aside from a few-year hiatus since 1997. If Tiger Woods hadn’t come along, I probably never would have picked the game up. I had a poster of him in my room in high school. My favorite sports stars are My Grandfather (World Horseshoe Champion), Tiger, Tom Brady, MJ, and Seve.

(Test Pilot)

My testing will include range work and on-course work, for me, the on-course performance is the final decision maker. I will gather some data, some eye testing, and hit the range quite often, but none of that matters if I pull driver without confidence during a round. Since we are getting two shafts, I plan to irritate my playing partners and hit one drive with each shaft on every driver hole alternating which one goes first.

My plans for the review and comparison are pretty much summed up above.  I was fit into the Mitsubishi Tensei White AV X 75 during my driver fitting.  The profile is firm all the way down compared to both Diamana Boards. I enjoy this shaft in the driver, I can swing like a madman and it still feels like a piece of rebar.

Will the WB or BB stay in the bag? For starters, it is going to be a tough go for them.  I know they have been played by the best, and a few of my favorite pros. They have to give me more confidence on the tee than the gamer, simple as that. My miss is a push fade at the moment. Should either of these tame that down… winner, winner, chicken dinner.

D5F964EB-8FEE-483B-A02F-B09D8C22BE53.jpeg.b66461cf5fee2e62fc10f7b82f1bace9.jpeg

I have never cared much about what shaft is in any of my clubs, until my fitting, so I am excited to see if either shaft can outperform the in-person fitting.  It is night and day performance-wise having a properly fit driver/shaft combo.  With as much clout as these two shafts have, I am the one that has to meet their standards. I enjoy anniversary and throwback-type stuff, so being a part of this test is pretty cool in that way as well.

I did a considerable amount of research on both of them and found that my favorite players have used them, Tiger, Adam, and many more. As I mentioned earlier, my Tensei profile is FIRM/FIRM/FIRM which gives me a low launch. The Whiteboard is a different profile that I think will help me close the face a bit quicker, yet keep the low launch I like to see. The profile for the WB is FIRM/FIRM+/MED+ and the BB is MED+/MED+/MED.  Right off the bat both of these sound promising.

My expectations for the test are very high. We get two top-shelf shafts to test out. As of now, I have a sneaking suspicion that the WB will end up being installed in the gamer as the full-time transmission.

Hello everyone! First, I want to say thank you to the MGS team for this incredible opportunity; I am beyond grateful.

My name is William, and I am writing from the Inland Empire of Southern California. My wife and I play regularly, but she has slowed down as she is now six months pregnant with our first child! She introduced me to golf about four years ago when she suggested we go on a date to a driving range. When someone heard how embarrassing that experience at the range was me(I learned the term "slice" rather quickly), they gifted me an older set from Adams and three lessons with their club pro—what an effective way to get someone hooked!

Fast forward to this year: in January ‘24 I was an 18 handicap and set the new year's resolution of becoming a single digit handicap; I am now sitting at 9.8 which doesn’t really feel like it counts, but we are almost there. It’s been a long year of working on fundamentals and making some swing changes, but I am happy with the way my game is trending.

I’m not the longest hitter, with my swing speed around 100 mph, but driving has become my strong suit on most days, followed by my short game.

This test really piqued my interest as I have been playing with several people who swear that a shaft changes everything. I have only ever used the stock shafts that came with my drivers and am eager to see if these high-end shafts actually make a difference. The real goal of my testing is to get these shafts out on the range and on the course to see how they feel and perform in different conditions. I play multiple times a week, so these shafts will be put through their paces.

I tend to fly the ball too high and am looking for a shaft that can provide a lower, more consistent ball flight that performs well in the wind and offers plenty of rollout. I currently carry my driver about 265 yards, and gaining distance doesn’t particularly interest me. Therefore, in terms of performance, whichever shaft can provide consistency in flight and dispersion will earn a spot in my bag.

To be completely honest, I am approaching this test with absolutely zero expectations regarding brand perception or preference to either of these shafts. I didn’t even realize my current shaft was also made by Mitsubishi until I had to submit the specs during the application process. Having never gone through a driver or shaft fitting, I have little understanding of kick points, weighting, torque, etc. All this to say, this test will be 100% based on what best suits my game and what will help me achieve lower scores with very little bias. That being said, I am also extremely excited for our Virtual Fitting and will provide extensive feedback on that experience. During the fitting, I will be asking many questions and look forward to their recommendations and what they set us up with.

More updates coming soon…

Introduction

Hello everyone! Thank you to the MGS Team for this incredible opportunity - and it isn't possible without the support and input from everyone in these forums who share their golf lives with all of us.

My name is James. I am 45 years old, and I live in Bristol, Tennessee. Bristol is split down the middle between Tennessee and Virginia - I like to tell people I can hit a 7 iron from my front porch in TN and have it land in VA...as a geography nerd, it's sort of cool. I've lived here for about a year and a half. After growing up in Southwest Florida, where it was a 5–6 hour drive just to get out of the state, one my favorite things about living in East TN is that I can play golf in 5 states within a 2 hour drive (TN, VA, NC, KY, WV).

I was born in the Chicago area, and I have been playing since I was about 11 years old. While I was interested (mostly because my Dad was interested), I didn't really get into golf until I moved to Fort Myers, FL when I was 15. Our house was off the 9th tee at San Carlos Golf Club, and they would let juniors play 9 holes in the afternoon during the summer for $3. My first friend in FL lived down the street, and we would practice chipping/putting around the 8th green in the evenings. His dad worked at a private course, and I spent my teenage years playing a lot of really good golf courses for free. I wasn't any good or anything, but decent enough to not be embarrassing in mixed company.

I started taking the game a little more serious as a young adult. Golf is incredibly expensive in the winter in FL, so I rarely played - but I practiced a lot. I worked nights, but I committed myself to practicing at least 3 days a week after work. When the prices dropped in the spring, I was back on the course regularly, often playing 18 in the morning with some guys I worked with, having lunch, then playing another 18 in the afternoon with friends (it's amazing how little sleep we required back then). In less than a year of dedicated practice and fine-tuning, I had gone from about a 22 to a 10...playing for skins with my buddies was suddenly a lot more fun.

I got married at 23 (22 years last month), started having kids, and golf went on the back burner - except for a week in May and a week in September, when my Dad would come down to Florida. We played every day, often getting 36 in. Playing golf with my Dad was probably my most favorite thing to do that didn't involve my kids. I lost my Dad far too soon in 2007, and golf went into cold storage for me. I played maybe once a year over the next decade-plus. I raised my kids, coached Little League, and finished law school.

When 2020 came along, I suddenly had plenty of time on my hands and decided it was time to take golf seriously again. I had myself back down to about a 9 by early 2023 in FL – but there was a sharp learning curve involved with playing in Appalachia. I went from soft, sandy turf, flat lies, and bermudagrass greens to firm turf, rarely having a level lie, and super-fast bent and bluegrass greens. I’ve been between 10-12 since then.

About This Test…

The best parts of my game tend to be iron and wedge play, although as my ball striking has improved, the need for more advanced irons with less offset has become apparent and will be addressed this winter – but that’s another thread.

Inconsistency with the driver has been one of the biggest issues in my game. I tend to hit it straight, but when I miss, I miss left. I feel like I could benefit from less spin and lower launch and I’m hoping the Diamana shafts will help me achieve my goal. Diamana shafts are legendary, and I fully expect the WB or BB to replace my current stock Project X HZRDUS shaft. On its face, I would expect the WB to perform the best, considering the launch/spin/bend…but feel means a lot to me too, and I can see the BB being possibly the better feeling shaft.

For testing, I plan to use launch monitor, on-course performance, and overall feel to score these shafts. I don’t expect distance to be much of a difference between my current shaft and the Diamana shafts (I could be wrong), so spin, launch, and dispersion will probably be the more important metrics here.

Driver is probably the one club in the bag where the shaft is just as important – if not more important – than the head itself. I’m looking forward to finding out how the Mitsubishi Diamana WB/BB shafts help me off the tee.

More to come soon…

Introduction

Hello fellow spies! I’m Chris, and I have become a complete golf and gear addict! First off, thank you to everyone at MyGolfSpy that made this test happen and for selecting me as one of the lucky participants! I have been seriously golfing for only about three years, but I do have an addictive personality (like many others on here I’m sure!!). I played baseball for the whole of my youth, and so golf has become my competitive outlet. This sport has turned into my hobby and focus in what little spare time I can find throughout the week. When possible I can be found hitting into my net in the back yard, at the local simulator, or hitting junk balls into the woods until my wife sees the damage to the lawn. I am a father to two young boys, ages six and two, the husband of an amazing wife of 10 years, and am currently in the finishing stags of earning my Doctor of Education degree.

I am currently an 18 handicap, but on days that I have it all working I play closer to a 10. I live in the Danville, VA, area and have access to quite a few quality public and semi-private courses. My main go-to is the Goodyear Golf Club, which provides ample opportunity but also ample trouble if you can’t find the semi short stuff from the tee. Over the past 1.5 years I’ve explored speed training and have been able to get my on-the-course driver swing speed from 95 to 110mph, and I can ramp that up when required. My strengths are distance with all clubs, short game, and creative shots where required. I have worked tirelessly to improve my putting and approach game, and have finally begun to see these areas improving of late.

I am thrilled to have been selected for such an awesome gear test! The Diamana White Board and Blue Board lines have a rich heritage going back 20 years, and so to be selected to test the newest rendition of such a renowned line is an honor that I do not take lightly. I was finally fitted for clubs this year, once for the entire bag and once for just the driver. I am currently swinging a Callaway Paradym AI Smoke Triple Diamond set at 9* with a Fujikura Ventus TR Blue 6X shaft at standard Callaway length. The other shaft I was fit into was a LA Golf DJ Series shaft. Both of these provide great feel, which I have come to appreciate in the golf swing. Feel provides me with a timing mechanism, as I am a hitter by nature. I try to attack the golf ball while it is sitting still on its tee instead of simply allowing it to get in the way of my swing. I really like how these shafts load and help to provide me with the cue as to when the backswing is completed. In addition, they are both rather stout shafts that can stand up to my aggressive transition. In order for either the Diamana WB or BB to stay in the bag, it will need to provide me with the same feedback while not increasing dispersion. Also, I will need to keep spin in the correct window of around 2200-2500 rpm. I do not have an issue with launching the driver, so height and launch angles will be tracked to ensure the Diamana line can keep things under control. In short, I want it all! A shaft that feels smooth, helps me to time my swing properly, and provides distance and dispersion to rival my gamer. If the data is good and the feel is there, one of these has a good chance of hanging around.

I have almost purchased a Mitsubishi BB profile on several occasions, as I prefer the feel and launch characteristics these shafts claim to have. The only other Mitsubishi shaft that I have any long-term experience with is the newest version of the Kai’li White; I found this shaft to be easy to swing while also controlling the launch angle. I expect to enjoy both of these shafts, with the BB coming out on top for me personally. I am a science teacher by day, so I will let the data speak for itself, however. I expect the WB to be an easy swinger with slightly lower launch and spin than its BB counterpart. I fully expect the BB to be the smooth jazz version of the WB. I plan on utilizing my local virtual golf simulator to get the best data possible in terms of ball speed, spin rates, launch angle, and dispersion. I’m a nerd, so I simply cannot wait to compare these numbers! Then I will take these out on course to directly compare them to each other and my two fitted shafts. I will be looking at launch windows, carry vs. roll-out, and dispersion. How will these perform when I HAVE to execute a particular shot? I look forward to updating everyone on how the virtual fitting experience goes and what the final specs are in each shaft that I will be receiving.

The intriguing factor in this test will be the different shaft profiles that are being tested and whether our testers find they prefer the white or blue, and how that stacks up against their gamers. If you can't tell, I'm excited for this one.

It will be fun hearing your thoughts on Diamana's latest offerings.  Mitsubishi has been on a long roll of top shelf golf shafts.  Have fun evaluating them.

Congratulations to y’all!

Had the chance to try both of the Diamana WB & BB 53 X shafts a few weeks ago in my Cobra Darkspeed LS 9 degree driver.

They compared favorably to the TPT Power Range 18 LO that I’m playing now which replaced the Diamana ZF 60S shaft that had been my gamer previously.

Diamana delivers again on their smooth feeling shaft reputation.

Definitely found one of the profiles suited me better than the other.

Curious to see what the tester’s experience will be.

So other than straighter drives, what are you hoping to get out of either shaft?  You mentioned hitting a lower push fade, are you hoping for a little more height and penetrating flight path?

Looking forward to following along.

I’m looking for a shaft that can provide plenty of smooth feel while also controlling spin and dispersion. I am in an AI Smoke Triple Diamond head due to having too much spin with my driver, and so I don’t want to see the spin creep up. The fitter even put the heavy weight in front, but then the Ventus TR Blue to help with timing and add a bit more consistency to the launch angle. Basically, I want to be able to go after it with everything I’ve got and have a shaft that can keep up. The Ventus fits these parameters and hopefully at least one of these shafts will as well.
